Everything's Gone Green

This was the week that all the tree leaves popped up here in the Great Lakes State.  Just beautiful.

Attention! Attention!

DIMBY, Corporate (that would be Mrs. 17) has informed me that she wants to hear Shinedown's new album, Attention Attention, and since I fancy myself as at least a little smarter than an old sock, I'll play it tonight.

You, of course, may play as you wish. I'm a hostage. (Besides, I wanna hear it too.)

Stockholm syndrome.

Oh, BTW, Mrs. 17 turned 29 again for the fouth time this Tuesday.

SCIENCE

Some of my very best trolling has been on the History of Philosophy of Science mailing list. Because I have no career to worry about I'm free to say pretty much anything I please with no regard whatsoever for who I offend. I have to make damned sure I'm 100% right, with all my i's dotted and t's crossed, and always respectfully because this crop sports multiple doctorates and they are some of the smartest people I've ever interacted with. They're human, though, and all humans make stupid mistakes, even Professors of Philosophy of Linguistics who are fluent in 17 languages. There are no songs about Kuhn or Feyerabend, so we'll have to make do with songs about Science!

Explicit Content

In 1985, a group of uptight political wives decided to do something about raunchy Rock 'N Roll songs.  They called themselves the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), and pushed a rating systems that could be used to censor what teens were allowed to hear.  Needless to say, quite a few freedom-loving artists were not amused.  They responded with songs that were critical of censorship in general and the PMRC in particular.

Ice-T let 'em have a piece of his mind with this song...

PMRC also inspired this song by Danzig...

Consider that last song a twofer 'cuz it's Mother's Day.

Ya can't go back, Bob

On this day in 1981, Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley died aged 36. In July 1977, Marley was found to have a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of a toe, Marley's health deteriorated as the cancer had spread throughout his body. Marley had the 1981 single 'No Woman No Cry', plus over ten other UK Top 40 singles. In 1990, the 6th February was proclaimed a national holiday in Jamaica to commemorate his birth. The compilation album, Legend, released in 1984, is the best-selling reggae album ever with sales of more than 20 million copies. Time magazine chose Bob Marley & The Wailers' Exodus as the greatest album of the 20th century.

Have I mentioned I'm considering business cards for "Dancin' in me Bones"?

Not Just Any Pill...

The FDA approved the use of oral contraceptives fifty-eight years ago today.  Gotta wonder if "Sex, Drugs and Rock 'N Roll" would have become a rallying cry without The Pill.

Sweetness, Fat and Smoke

Pulled some ribs out of the freezer.  Gonna fire up the grill.  It's that kind of day.

Let There Be Power Chords

On this day in 1929, the "Father of the Power Chord" was born.

That would be Link Wray.

(Also, on this day in 2006, Keith Richards fell out of a coconut tree.  Just sayin'...)
