Kind Of Blue

Released in 1959, Miles Davis' 'Kind Of Blue' is considered the greatest Jazz album of all time.  With a line-up that includes John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone and Bill Evans on piano, the word that comes to mind when listening to 'Kind Of Blue' is perfection.

Los Angeles

X came out of the 70's LA punk scene.  Bassist John Doe and Exene Cervenka provide the singing and the songs, with Billy Zoom playing a sassy guitar and DJ Bonebrake on the drums.

Produced by Ray Manzarek, 'Los Angeles' is their debut album.  Manzarek also played the organ on three tracks and the synthesizer on one.

Let It Bleed

Every now and then, a song comes along that is so unique and powerful nothing quite like it has been done before or since.  It simply can't be duplicated, and any attempt to cover it will never have the impact of the original.  Such a song is 'Gimme Shelter', the opening track on 'Let It Bleed' by The Rolling Stones.

Last Thursday was the fiftieth anniversary of the release of 'Let It Bleed'.  I was going to mark the date by just featuring 'Gimme Shelter', but then decided to pay tribute to the full album.

Karaoke Night?

I've noticed a lot of commercials using tunes without vocals. Many times the tune played has nothing to do with the product being advertised. But that's not important. What is important is that the song rights have been sold for things like incontinance pills, vaginal disinfectants, and even rectal examinations.

What the hell are our musicians becoming but nothing other than Capitalists?

You're allowed to sing along, but please don't wake the neighbors.

Boogie in the Mud

With all the rain this year, I've been wallowing in mud since last April.  There was a brief respite when we got an early snow in November and the mud froze up.  Then the snow melted, which was followed by another week or two of rain.

This morning, I woke up at three to the sound of more rain and thunder.  When my husband let the dogs out at five-thirty, the rain had turned to snow.  Two hours later, it was back to rain although by then it was just spitting.

Anyway, I had to go pick up a buck goat this morning so I could breed some of my does this year.  And as these animals will do when they're moved to a new place, he panicked as soon as I got him out of my truck...  put the buck in buckin', so to speak.  That boy was leaping and throwing himself all around, dang near pulling my arm out of the socket, but I held on to his leash until he tired himself out.  Then I began walking him to the pen where a couple of does were waiting.

We were almost to the pen when he decided to throw another hissy fit.  And right as I almost got him under control, my foot slid on the slush and mud, and down I went.

Proud to say, I managed to hang on to that buck even as my butt hit the ground.  I may be getting old, but I'm still tough enough to wrestle with an angry buck.

So now I'm wet, muddy and smelling like a he-goat.

That calls for a song...

Black Friday Again

That's right, it's Black Friday again. As is traditional, I charged the truck's battery and pulled it outta the garage so as to gain access to the attic.

And as usual, we drug the Xmas decorations down so the Missus can do her thing.

And, as I do every year, note the disrespect all the other colors seem to get this day.

Roger The Engineer

The Yardbirds were an English band who may be best known for launching the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.  Clapton replaced their original guitarist in 1963.  Two years later, when he left to play with John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, Clapton recommended Jimmy Page as his replacement.  Page turned down the offer, recommending Jeff Beck.  Later, Page filled in on the bass for a few month before switching to guitar and trading licks with Beck.

'Roger The Engineer' was released in 1966.  In my opinion, it's one of the best Rock 'N Roll albums of the era, featuring Keith Relf on lead vocals and harmonica; Jeff Beck on lead guitar (plus singing the lead on 'The Nazz Are Blue'); Chris Dreja on rhythm guitar and piano; Paul Samwell Smith on bass; and Jim McCarty on drums and percussion.

Singing Bones

What do you get when a fella from Texas marries a gal from Long Island and starts a band in Chicago?

Answer: The Handsome Family.

Brett Sparks plays guitar and keyboards, does most of the singing and composes the melodies.  Rennie Sparks plays bass and banjo, sings lead on a few songs and writes the lyrics.

Released in 2003, 'Singing Bones' is their sixth studio album.

On this day in 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald went missing on Lake Superior.  Since I live in Michigan and am a bit of a nerd when it comes to Great Lakes maritime lore, thought I'd take a moment to remember that fine ship and her crew.

Long Nights

The short winter days would be bad enough without the damn time change.  By changing the clock, it will start getting dark at five in the afternoon... about the time that most people are getting home from work.  And they wonder why there's something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

Suppose I could look on the bright side.  It's only seven more weeks before the days start to get longer.

Friday, November 1, 2019

Yep Folks, It's that time of year again

Don't forget to change yer clocks this weekend.  Someone once told me that only a white man would cut the top off his blanket and sew it to the bottom to make it longer. Anyway enjoy your extra hour of sleep.

Eleven Eleven

Dave Alvin once said, "There are two types of  folk music... quiet folk music and loud folk music. I play both."

Alvin began playing both types of "folk music" in The Blasters, a band that he formed with his brother, Phil, back in 1979.  Along with The Blasters, he also played for a time with the Los Angeles punk band, X, a country punk band called The Knitters that was a side project of three members of X, and with The Flesh Eaters.

As so often seems to be the case with musical brothers in the same band, the Alvin boys had a reputation for fighting, which may have led to the break up of The Blasters in 1986 and the beginning of Dave Alvin's solo career.

Released in 2011, 'Eleven Eleven is Alvin's eleventh solo album and, in my opinion, one of his best.

Stop That Train

While looking around for something to post in today's thread, I came across this piece of American history,

The Reno brothers carry out the first train robbery in U.S. history

On October 6, 1866, the brothers John and Simeon Reno stage the first train robbery in American history, making off with $13,000 from an Ohio and Mississippi railroad train in Jackson County, Indiana.
Of course, trains had been robbed before the Reno brothers’ holdup. But these previous crimes had all been burglaries of stationary trains sitting in depots or freight yards. The Reno brothers’ contribution to criminal history was to stop a moving train in a sparsely populated region where they could carry out their crime without risking interference from the law or curious bystanders.

That's a hell of a way to leave your mark on history.  Pretty smart too, if you don't mind robbery.

Ya Gotta Know Your Limitations

49 years ago today, Janis Joplin was found dead in her hotel room of an overdose.

It's an all-too-tragedy; Jimi Hendrix died of an overdose less than a month earlier, and in July '71, Jim Morrison met a similar fate. All three were 27 when they died.

"Mercedes Benz" was recorded on her last night alive.

Pink Moon

Nick Drake was one of those troubled geniuses in the 60s and 70s who had a brief but brilliant musical career.  He released three wonderful albums in three years.  Then, after his third album was released, Drake withdraw from the music scene, saying he had no more songs to play.  He died two years later.  His death was ruled a suicide.

Released in 1972, 'Pink Moon' was his final album.

The Afro-Eurasian Eclipse

As someone who may be America's greatest composer, Duke Ellington had a musical career that spanned more than fifty years.  I can't even count how many albums he released.  If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say somewhere around 200, maybe more, not including compilations.

'The Afro-Eurasian Eclipse' is one of Mr. Ellington's later albums, recorded in 1971.  Inspired by the people he met and the music he heard while travelling around the world with his orchestra, this may be his most intriguing work... and that's saying something.

"Art is dangerous.  It is one of the attractions.  When it ceases to be dangerous you don't want it."

~ Duke Ellington

Bone Machine

Tom Waits is one of those artists who doesn't fit into any category.  Can't really call him Rock 'N Roll.  Or Jazz, or Blues or Country.  I suppose you could call his music All Of The Above, but even that doesn't quite describe it.

'Bone Machine' is his tenth studio album.

A Little Bit Faster And A Little Bit Worse

Never been a fan of live albums as a rule.  They tend to be second-rate recordings that add nothing new or interesting to good songs, and often make me wonder if the band needs some studio wizardry to sound like they can play.

The Devil Makes Three seems to understand this, which may be why they named their first live album 'A Little Bit Faster And A Little Bit Worse'.

Released in 2006, this is one of those live albums that is the exception to the rule.  The songs may be a little faster than the studio recordings, but they are not even a little bit worse.

And so once again we come up on a holiday that was created so our overlords could pretend they care about working men and women.

I was going to post a little rant about how those jackasses are screwing everyone else, but then I thought, Why bother?  Won't make it better.  Just play some music.

A little Holiday music would hit the spot right now....

Earlier this evening we were sitting on the front porch and the subject of shenanigans that we pulled when we were kids came up.  You guessed it, 17 was a little hoodlum and I of course the princess.  That being said,
remember this before you do anything stupid this weekend, the judge won't be back til Tuesday.

Black Market

One of my favorite saxophonists is Wayne Shorter.  He began his career playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, then went on to join Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet.  He has also worked as a solo artist, and as a sideman for such musicians as Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana and Steely Dan.  In 1971, he founded the Jazz-Fusion band, Weather Report, along with Joe Zawinul and Miroslav VitouÅ¡.

Today is Mr. Shorter's 85th birthday.  Thought I'd pay pay tribute to him by featuring an album by Weather Report.

Mud and Music

Fifty years ago, some people got together in a muddy field to listen to other people play music.

They believed they were changing the world.

They weren't.

All they got for their efforts were an album, a movie and a few memories... assuming they weren't too stoned to remember what they did.

Such is life.

Meet a Dugger

I'm the Dugar that the media never talks about. I've got 8 children. My newest came last night. So now I have 9.

I'm a very fertile man, and every time I've brought a new one into the home, I was supposed to get rid of one. Well, I didn't live up to that commitment.

But now that, as of last night, I can proudly announce the birth of another baby, I must fulfill my commitment.

3 of my children will be thrown in the trash. Let the landfill eat them. Gawd Bless the little children.

2 of my children have earned their spot to be encapsolated in the closet. Gawd Bless the little children.

I feel this is the beginning of a slippery slope. Next thing you know, she'll be throwing out my things when I die.

If there is an Australian Alt-Rock supergroup, it might just be the Beasts Of Bourbon.  I've read that the Beasts began as a joke among former members of The Scientists, The Johnnys, The Dum Dums and The Hoodoo Gurus.

Unintended Consequences

I recently learned that at one time, Vietnam was so overrun by rats that they put a bounty on them. They offered money to anyone who turned in a rat tail. Good idea, right? This worked for awhile, until people realized they could make more money by breeding rats. Before long, Vietnam had a bigger problem than when they started.

Another example? A certain bigmouth decided he'd run for a certain high office, but did everything he could to be defeated. Next thing you know, he's elected. Now every aspect of his criminal life is under the microscope.

Unintended consequences.

Muddy Unplugged

Released in 1964, 'Folk Singer' is Muddy Waters's fourth studio album.  It's also his only acoustic album.

Unplugged, if you will.

Along with Muddy on vocals and guitar, there is a fine back-up band that features Willie Dixon playing the upright bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy adding a second guitar.

Muddy, Willie, Clifton and Buddy...  Doesn't get much better than that.

Some People Have All The Fun

From Music History Calendar

On this day in 1987...

Ozzy Osbourne performs "Jailhouse Rock" at Wormwood Scrubs prison in London, England. He says it's his "last good memory of the '80s."
Before the show, Ozzy is treated to tea. During the course of his conversation with the tea maker, it is revealed that the man is in prison because he poisoned eight people to death. Ozzy shoots tea out of his nose and nearly throws his mug against the wall.
The Scrubs, a band composed of prison guards and prisoners alike, open for Ozzy. The bass player is the perpetrator of one of the biggest mass killings in British history, having burned 37 people to death in a Soho nightclub. The guitarist is in Wormwood for beating a drug dealer to death.
The Scrubs finish and Ozzy takes the stage with guitarist Zakk Wylde and bassist Bob Daisley for the first time. Both men become regular collaborators.
The smell of weed is so heavy in the air that it reminds Ozzy of a "Jamaican wedding." There is a bar outside the door serving drinks to some of the guards.
Ozzy looks in the crowd and sees Jeremy Bamber, who murdered his entire family and tried to pin it all on his mentally ill sister. Ozzy recognizes “the old Bambinator” from tabloid photos.
The show culminates with Ozzy and his band performing "Jailhouse Rock" with the Scrubs. During the song, the crowd storms the stage. The "invasion" is led by a man who tried to cut the head off of constable Keith Blakelock during the infamous Broadwater Farm riot.
Ozzy and his band escape unscathed. Later, in his book I Am Ozzy, Ozzy recalls the incident as his "last good memory of the eighties."

Bossa Nova on a Summer Afternoon

We lost João Gilberto, also known as the "Father of the Bossa Nova", on July 6 of this year.

In 1963, Gilberto went into the studio with Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim to record an album that blended American Jazz with Brazilian Bossa Nova.  Astrud Gilberto, João's first wife, was also invited into the studio to sing.  It was the first time Astrud sang professionally, and although she was only featured on two tracks she almost stole the show.

Thought I'd pay tribute to João Gilberto by featuring this beautiful album on this summer afternoon.

What the Hell was I Thinking?

Ok, so I'm singin' in the shower the other night, when I realize it's a tune from my childhood. So naturally I call out, "Hey Mrs.17! (Because that's what I call her these days), Write this down! Songs that shaped your life!"

Well, it's hard to pin down a specific tune that made you who you are, but it's alot easier to find one that describes your attitude now.

Anyway, for your consideration:

And how I feel today?:

Tell me where you came from.

Revelation

Musician, producer, engineer, and some would say a prophet too, Lee 'Scratch' Perry is one of the pioneers of Dub and Reggae.  I couldn't tell you how many albums he's made.  If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around sixty, and that doesn't include the albums he produced for other people.  'Revelation' is one of three albums Perry made with Steve Marshall.  Released in 2010, it includes guest appearances by Keith Richards, and by George Clinton, who co-wrote the 5th track ('Scary Politicians') with Perry.

I'm a Dirty Rat

Pack-rat that is. Ask Mrs. 17. She calls me a Hoarder. She don't know. Ask her how many times I've needed to fix something, and have just the cure.

There's nothing wrong with saving 20 or so Ice Cream buckets. There's always a need for 200 or so twist ties. And screws, nuts and bolts? Don't get me started.

So I have a folder on my desktop labelled "Save" that happens to be full of tunes I've saved. I don't know why, so I guess we'll find out together.

See? If I hadn't "saved" them, we'd have nothing to share tonight.

Maybe It's Time To Build An Ark

There might have been five days without rain since the first of May.

Things are starting to get kind of scary.  Most farmers couldn't get in their fields to plant their crops until last week.  Those who farm in lowlands may not get a crop in this year because the ground is too damn wet.

The hay is now two feet tall.  It should be a hell of a harvest if we ever have enough dry days to mow it, cure it, bale it and pull it out of the fields.

And my gardens?  My potatoes, corn, cabbages and winter squash have all been planted.  Most of my chilis, tomatoes, broccoli and beans are in the ground too, but I haven't even begun to plant carrots, beets, salad greens or summer squash.  Most years, everything is in the ground no later than the first week of June.  This year I might be planting right up to the fourth of July.

Never thought I'd be hoping for a drought.  Just a mini drought, mind you, one that lasts three or four weeks so the farmers will have enough time to bring in the hay.

You Become Naked

When it comes to most albums by The Beatles, I can take 'em or leave 'em.  Sure, they're all good albums.  It's just that they tend to be a bit too slick and overproduced for my tastes.  The exception is the so-called 'White Album'. That one definitely has a place on my list of Top Ten Greatest Rock albums.

The Alien Has Left The Planet

Roky Erickson was a pioneer of Psychedelic Rock as the singer and songwriter for 13th Floor Elevators.  The band broke up when Roky was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic.  He spent three years inside, where he was dosed with Thorazine and subjected to electroconvulsive therapy.

Therapy, indeed.

After he was released from the hospital, Roky made a musical comeback of sorts.  He started another band that he called Bleib Alien.  (Roky often claimed he was from another planet.)  Renamed Roky Erickson and The Aliens in 1979, they went into the studio and recorded the songs that ended up on an album called 'The Evil One'.

Roky left this planet to walk with ghosts, zombies and two-headed dogs on May 31, 2019.  Thought I'd pay tribute to him by playing 'The Evil One'.  It's some damn fine Rock 'N Roll.

Completely Worthless

Now that I'm done at the Plant plant, I'm being accused of being lazy, even though I'm the guy who has to do the housework now.

I'll admit that I don't do it on her schedule, but it'll get done eventually. Making the bed and doing the dishes every day is exhausting. Cutting the grass every week was a chore in itself. And laundry? Don't get me started.

Ok. I'll own it. I was lazy this week.

Drums and Wires

XTC is one of my favorite bands that came out of the British Punk movement, although they never really fit into the genre.  For one thing, they could actually play their instruments.

Released in 1979, 'Drums and Wires' is their third studio album.

Musta Been the Boots

Last day of work today.

Shook some hands, gave a few hugs, even had sex in the bathroom with a gal who had a hat I particularly liked. Other than that...it was a good day. How'd yours go?

Pretzel Logic

Sometimes perfection can be boring.

Other times it can be pure bliss.

'Pretzel Logic' belongs in the latter camp.

Oh Yeah

Thought I'd do something different and feature a Jazz album on this Sunday afternoon.

After featuring Joni Mitchell last Wednesday, it seemed only fitting to follow up with an album by Charles Mingus since she worked with him before his death.

While Mingus was best known as a bassist, he could also carry a tune and play a decent piano.  In 1961, he went into the studio to record 'Oh Yeah', hiring Doug Watkins to play the bass so he could focus on singing and playing the piano.  Other musicians on the album included Dannie Richmond on drums, Booker Ervin on tenor saxophone and Jimmy Knepper on trombone, but the musician who really makes this album stand out is Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who is credited with playing flute, siren, tenor saxophone and variations on the saxophone called a manzello and a stritch.

Kirk was fond of modifying and creating his own instruments.  He even modified his saxophones so he could play three at once, using his left hand to play the tenor sax and his right hand to play the manzello while using the stritch to produce a drone.

It's too bad that Mingus and Kirk didn't work together more often because their chemistry was out of this world.   Mix Mingus's oddball sense of humor with Kirk's mad genius and you have one helluva a musical trip.

The Power of Pie

Tonight I thought we'd check out some music associated with numbers.

The inspiration for this thread came from a TV commercial where a woman made a pie with the symbol for Pi baked into it. Took me a second time watching the thing to realize the Pie-Pi connection.

My decision for this topic has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that today is

Hejira

In the mood for some Joni Mitchell.  'Hejira' is her eighth studio album.
