Man's Ruin

No. I don't mean arithmetic. I'm talking about WOMEN! Women singers, women bassists, all the women of music. Songs about women. Videos with tons of women in them. I want females, and lots of them! BRING ME ALL THE WOMEN!

Paying Tribute To The King Of Blues

On this day in 1992, Willie Dixon gave up his ghost.  If anyone epitomized the Chicago Blues, it was Mr. Dixon.  He was a songwriter extraordinaire, and a generous soul who gave some of his best songs to other musicians.  Think "Back Door Man", "Evil" and "Spoonful" by Howlin' Wolf, "Insane Asylum" and "Wang Dang Doodle" by Koko Taylor, "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "You Shook Me" by Muddy Waters, or "Dead Presidents" by Little Walter, to name a few.  His songs were also covered by the Rock 'N Roll crowd.  The Doors, Johnny Thunders, J. Geils, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, and Captain Beefheart were among those who turned to Mr. Dixon for inspiration.  Oh, and Led Zeppelin too, although they failed to give him credit which is why Mr. Dixon sued them and won.  Mr. Dixon may have been generous but he wasn't a fool.

Then there's his work as a sideman, playing the double bass on recordings by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed,  Jimmy Rogers, Sonny Boy Williamson, Johnny Winter and Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green.

Beginning in 1962, Mr. Dixon worked with several German promoters to organize the American Folk Blues Festival, bringing some of the finest Chicago Blues artists to Europe.   Below is a video that includes footage from the American Folk Blues Festivals during the years that Mr. Dixon was involved.

And here is a film of Mr. Dixon doing an acoustic version of "Weak Brain, "Narrow Mind" for an old Chicago TV show.

Play it again, Sam!

This one will be easy and fun!

Over the last year we've all come across songs that we liked so much we've played them again and again. I posted this song once and not realizing it, Pat posted it months later, then accidentally posted it again. Well, it's a fucking righteous song! Let's celebrate the music that hit us hardest last year with no regard for whether we've posted it before!

Listen with your eyes for feelings.

VIDEOS!

Music has seized our species by the brain stem for many millennia but ours is the first generation to really exploit the synergy resulting from simultaneous complex visual input. You've seen many thousands of videos - which ones stuck out? Which were the best? The scariest? The saddest? The most inspiring? Was it created by a fan? Was it animated? Stop motion?  3D? Groundbreaking? Was a compelling silent backstory embedded?  Did you just think it was visually appealing for no special reason? My eyeballs thirst...

Punk Monday... Because The System Still Sucks

I was listening to some old Crass albums the other day and decided to do this thread.

There are some who say Crass was the only real Punk band because they actually walked the talk.  Fighting to make the world a better place while advocating for self-reliance wasn't just a fashion statement or virtue signaling for the men and women in Crass.  They did their best to live it.

There was a time when I tried to live it too.  Still do for the most part, the main difference between now and then being that I no longer believe we can influence the overlords who are running this shit show on Planet Earth.

So I'm doing this thread for nostalgia's sake... for a time when some of us still hoped that we could change the world.

Not that everyone has to play some Punk tunes.  Anything goes.  There are no rules.  That's part of the Punk ethos... at least in theory.  And if someone wants to play a few tunes to honor Elvis on his birthday, that's cool too.

It's A Country Kind Of Day

January 1st is a big day for Country music.  To start things off, one of Country's greatest singer-songwriters died on this day in 1953.  Hank Williams was only 29 when he died, but he left behind a body of work that few would ever match.

This is one my favorite songs by Mr. Williams...

Also on this day in 1959, Johnny Cash played a free concert for inmates at San Quentin Prison.  One of the inmates in the audience was Merle Haggard, who was serving time for grand theft auto and armed robbery.  Seems that Johnny inspired Merle to straighten up, fly right and pursue a musical career after he was released.

This is from a live album that was recorded at Folsom Prison, where Mr. Cash did a free concert for the inmates in 1968...

And while I'm at it, here's one by Mr. Haggard.  I had the pleasure of pouring a few drinks for Mr. Haggard one night back in 1976.  He was every bartender's dream customer... quiet, polite and generous with the tips.
